Largest such funding ever to provide housing as part of the American Rescue Plan

CEDAR CITY, Utah–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#cedarcity–Two Iron County organizations are the recipients of a $6 million grant from the American Rescue Plan and the Utah Office of Homeless Services to create more affordable housing in Cedar City and surrounding communities. The Iron County Care & Share and Canyon Creek Services are partnering with a third-party group to purchase an existing apartment building.

“This grant helps Care & Share continue assisting underserved members of the community,” said Peggy Green, executive director of the Iron County Care & Share. “We are now able to both refer those who come to us to the housing facility and also have better resources available to provide food and other necessities. The grant is the largest dollar amount ever invested in affordable housing in Iron County, and it will make a huge impact in our ability to help families, veterans and others who face homelessness.”

The organizations’ ownership of the property provides them more flexibility for helping their clients, while also generating revenue for future programs and projects. The planned housing facility will include deeply affordable units and units at market value.

These housing options also benefit vulnerable victims of domestic abuse and expands their options for reaching safety and self-reliance.

“Safe and independent housing is an incredible barrier for survivors who are fleeing abuse,” said Kait Sorensen, Executive Director for Canyon Creek Services. “The benefits from this grant allow our organization to provide even more resources and options for those at their most vulnerable, and a more sustainable option for these families to start over and build a new life.”

The grant process was robust, and the selection process was competitive with applicants from across the state, all looking to improve the housing crisis in Utah. The joint effort in Cedar City was selected based on the cooperative efforts among the organizations and the long-term solutions presented in the application.

“We are always looking for solutions to housing struggles locally, to bring heart to the housing industry,” said Derek Morton, owner and principal broker for Netgain Property Management, the third-party partner. “This grant makes those goals and hopes a reality. We look forward to aiding both the Care & Share and Canyon Creek Services in providing options to those who are dealing with housing insecurity.”
